Formerly known as the State Museum of Azerbaijan Carpet and Applied Arts, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum displays an extensive collection of traditional Azerbaijani carpets and rugs. Some of these items date back to as early as the 17th century, and others are adorned with silver and gold embellishments. These carpets are weaved in various techniques and are made from different materials. The museum is known for having the biggest collection of traditional Azerbaijani carpets around the world. In 2010, UNESCO declared the museum a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage.

The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum also serves as a research and training center where various events and cultural exhibits are being held. Opened in 1967, the museum has already organized more than 30 different exhibits in its 50 years of existence.
