Baku city is one of the most beautiful cities in the Caucasus. Located at the joint of Europe and Asia Baku is famous for its beautiful views, mix of traditional and modern, architecture, friendly people, gastronomy and of course oil. Baku is the capital city of Petroleum industry in Azerbaijan.

Things to do in Baku:
After visiting the modern city center, Baku Bay and nice walk in Baku Boulevard, you must visit main and the most beautiful part of Baku, Old City also known as Icheri Sheher. Immerse yourself in the past and explore some main landmarks:
The Palace of Shirvanshahs is located in Icheri Sheher, Icheri Sheher became the capital city of Shirvan in the 14th century, soon in the 15th century the Shirvanshahs built stunning palace for their dynasty. The Palace of Shirvanshahs is unique architectural landmark, it is known as “The pearl of Azerbaijan Architecture” and is among World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Ateshgah Temple was Zoroastrian fire worship place for a while. Worshippers left this place when natural gas run out and there was no more "holy" fire in here. Fire is a sign of God for Zoroastrians, so when it disappeared worshippers thought it was punishment from god. Now this place is another tourist attraction with eternal fire altar.

Baku is amazing city and there are a lot of things to do in the city center, but if you have a couple of hours, there are unbelievable places to see near the town.
When you visit Baku be sure to see Gobustan National Park. National Reserve is located very close to the capital city, just one hour drive. You can explore 40 000 years of rock paintings, carvings and mud volcanoes in Gobustan National Park. Just imagine yourself in the different time and space, these paintings and carvings reflect local life during past 40 000 years, their rituals, matters, everyday lifestyle.
These paintings are absolutely unique, mostly there are scenes of hunting, dancing, war, appearance of the people of that time. This is something really special, that's why Gobustan National Park and Art Reserve is among UNESCO World Heritage sites since 2017.
Yanar Dag – Burning Mountain is the second unusual thing to see near Baku. As you know Azerbaijan is known as “Land of Fire”, Yanar Dag is example of it. Yanar Dag is a burning hill, this hill already burns for many years, snow or rain have no effect on it. The thing is that there is natural burning gas in this place. In the past this place was very precious for Zoroastrians, Yanar Dag was a fire worship place, because fire is sign of god for Zoroastrians. Now Yanar Dag is a great attraction for the tourists. Every year lots of people visit it. Yanar Dag is especially beautiful at night, people take places on the benches near burning mountain and admire the amazing view.
Baku is a great spot for gastronomy lovers. You can try amazing Caucasus dishes here. Kebab, Baliq, Lavangi, Plov and many others, traditional cuisine is full of flavours, spices, fresh meat, vegetables and greens. Don't forget to taste very traditional and the most delicious sweets - traditional Pakhlava known as "Baklava", this flavoursome pastry is so delicious!
Tea tradition is very important part of Azeri Gastronomy, black tea is a national drink of Azerbaijan, local people drink tea everywhere. There are special tea glasses in Azerbaijan, buying them and traditional black tea as a gift or souvenir is a quite good idea!
Azerbaijan government is trying to make Baku as modern and comfortable and interesting as it’s possible. There are lots of special attractions for tourists, for example in the city center you can suddenly explore “Small Venice” and ride Gondola, also you can ride Baku Eye and admire fantastic view! Night life, clubbing and other entertainment is waiting for you in modern Baku city!
