The History Museum of Armenia was established in 1920 and houses a collection of more than 400,000 objects. These materials were collected from various organizations and institutions in the country including purchases from individuals.  This museum is financially supported by the state and the government owns most of the collections including the building.

The History Museum became the main resource for establishing several other museums in the country, including the Museum of History of Yerevan and Armenian Ethnographic Museum. It continues to replenish its vast archeological collections from the excavations made at the various ancient sites all over the country. Currently, there are more than 400,000 exhibitions in the museum and 5,000 of these are permanent displays.
