Chronicles of Georgia

Chronicles of Georgia

Also known as the History Memorial of Georgia, the Chronicles of Georgia is one of Tbilisi’s hidden gems. There’s not much information written known about this remarkable memorial, yet it’s one of those places that are definitely worth checking out during your trip to Georgia. This monument is made of stone and sits on top of a set of massive stairs. It’s located close to Tbilisi and was built in 1985 by Zurab Tsereteli, a famous sculptor known for his large-scale and, sometimes, controversial works.

Author of the Monument

As mentioned, the man behind the Chronicles of Georgia is Zurab Tsereteli, a popular Russian sculptor. Born in 1934, Tsereteli graduated from the Academy of Arts in Tbilisi. Since 1997, he serves as the president of the Russian Academy of Arts. He lives in Russia and his works can be found in various places all over the world.

Tsereteli built the Chronicles of Georgia out of stone and encrypted the timeline of Georgia in it. Standing profoundly in Tbilisi, the monument overlooks the gorgeous views of the Tbilisi Sea.

What Makes the Chronicles of Georgia Interesting?

The Chronicles of Georgia is not just a mere monument that was sculpted out of stone. It also tells of the interesting history of Georgia from the early times. On the sculptures, you’ll find drawings about the famous kings of Georgia and some people who played significant roles in the history of the country. For instance, there’s the cross of Saint Nino, one of the most revered saints for Georgians. The sculpture also features the life of Jesus Christ.

The Georgian Literature is also chronicled in the monuments, such as the torture of Shushaniki, which took place during the IV Century. You’ll also find a portrayal of different celebrations, including Christian holidays that have been engraved deeply in the Georgian culture.

Indeed, visiting the Chronicles of Georgia is one of the best ways to learn more about the history and culture of Georgia. The monuments are definitely a joy to explore. They are so massive that you’ll feel tiny wandering around them. Plus, the gorgeous views of the Tbilisi Sea from here are definitely breathtaking!

Visiting the Chronicles of Georgia

There isn’t much information about how to reach the Chronicles of Georgia. This can be a challenge for independent travelers who will choose to visit on their own instead of booking a tour.

But here’s how to go there on your own. First, take the metro line going to the Station Square Station. As you alight at the station, head to the Railway Passage Bridge Bus Station. Take Bus # 111 from the bus station and get off at the Military School. From the bus stop of the Military School, the sculptures should already be visible. It’s about 500 meters away from here so you can reach it for about a few minutes of walking.

After exploring the Chronicles of Georgia, you may want to visit a small church nearby, called the Saint Mary Church. Featuring a typical Georgian architecture, this beautiful church has stunning murals inside that were made from vitreous enamel.
