Open Air Museum of Ethnography

13 July 2019

   1 Turtle Lake Road, Tbilisi

    10 : 00 - 18 : 00, closed on Mondays

Tbilisi's outdoor ethnographic museum, which overlooks the Vake district, provides visitors with a great opportunity to learn about the different types of Georgian folk architecture and craftwork all in one place.

Named after the Georgian ethnographer, Giorgi Chitaia, the museum has been preserving authentic Georgian homes -- all relocated from their original properties across the major regions of Georgia -- since the 60s. Some of the architecture includes fiat-roofed stone homes from eastern Georgia, wooden homes with gable roofs from the west, and watchtowers from the mountainous regions of Svaneti and Khevsureti.

The museum is a perfect spot for solo travelers, families, and those looking for a scenic photo shoot; its open, sprawling space midway on the mountain side serves as a fitting backdrop to the country's surprising variety of traditional, wooden homes.

The museum is also an active host for public events that include Georgian folk singing and dancing, art fairs, and more. Don't miss out on this place the next time you plan a trip to Tbilisi!
