The Taghiyev History Museum in Baku is housed in a mansion owned by H.Z. Taghiyev, an Azerbaijani oil baron who lost everything during the Soviet invasion. During the Red Army invasion of Azerbaijan, also known as the Sovietization, Taghiyev’s mansion and all his possessions were confiscated. His home was transformed into the National History Museum after the Bolsheviks got a hold of his property in 1920.
Today, the Taghiyev History Museum houses a great collection of historic artifacts that tell the story of the country. It is a great reminder of the opulence of Taghiyev as an oil baron 100 years ago, as evidenced on the ornate and lavish interiors of the mansion. This museum is a great place to visit if you want to learn more about Azerbaijan’s rich history and the life and times of H.Z. Taghiyev.
